Sheffield Park, Chateaugay, 1920s

Sheffield Park, Chateaugay, as it was between 1920 and 1930. The grandstand was a beehive of activity when the Chateaugay Ponies played baseball. At one time it also drew crowds to watch horse racing and bets were wagered. Some wins and some losses, in the golden days before the depression.

The racetrack was located in the area, now overgrown in brush, south of the milk plant, or behind the co-op.

MY GRANDFATHER AND GRANDMOTHER ERNEST & ELIZABETH BARNES LIVED IN THE LAST(NOW THE ONLY) HOUSE ON SHEFFIELD ST IN THE 1960′S. IT WAS THEN OWNED BY A MR FLOYD ROUNDS AT THE TIME.WHO SPENT ALOT OF TIME SOCIALIZING AT THE HOTEL CHATEAUGAY
WE USED TO VISIT FOR 2 OR 3 WEEKS EVERY SUMMER.
& STAY AT THE HOUSE ON SHEFFIELD. MY GRANDMOTHER ELIZABETH TOLD ME THAT THE AREA WAS ON THE EAST SIDE OF SHEFFIELD ST (A DIRT ROAD) WAS KNOWN AS “THE CHATEAUGAY FAIRGROUNDS” (RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET WHERE THEY WERE LIVING)- THAT WAS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF SHEFFIELD ST- EVEN NOW APPARENTLY
McCADDAM HAS BUILT SOME AT THE SOUTH END OF THE ROAD, EVEN BACK IN THE 60′S THE WHOLE AREA WAS VACANT.GOOD OLE CHATEAUGAY, HOW I MISS IT!!!-MIKE BARNES
